Earthquakes include normal earthquakes as well as slow earthquakes over a wide frequency range (period) from a few hertz to a day. The probabilistic predictability of earthquakes will be examined by focusing on the hierarchical fault structure that exists in the earthquake zone. Research on seismic phenomena in Japan and other parts of the world will be conducted to clarify the universal nature of earthquakes.

Co-Investigator

Suguru Yabe（Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology）
Naofumi Aso（Department of Applied , Faculty of Advanced Engineering, Physics, Tokyo University of Science）

Image of various types of earthquake on complex fault system

FY2021-2025 Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas (A)

Principal
Investigator

Satoshi IDE

Project

Science of Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes

Summary

We aim to construct a comprehensive understanding of slow earthquakes, which are a new phenomenon discovered in this century, and fast earthquakes, which have a significant impact on society, in order to reconstruct seismology and make quantitative predictions about future earthquake occurrence. For this purpose, we will form the research area “Science of Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes”. While further maturing the fusion of physics, geology, geophysics, and geochemistry formed in the former project, “Science of Slow Earthquakes”, we will develop an advanced fusion of disciplines in collaboration with new fields such as engineering and information science. Through six planned research projects that aim to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s geological environment from the acquisition of primary information through experimental observation to analysis and analysis, as well as a number of open research projects and a variety of joint research projects, we aim to create a new academic revolution and contribute to human society.

Research Group

X00：Administrative Group
A01：Physicochemical processes in slow-to-fast phenomena
A02：Anatomy of Slow-to-Fast seismogenic zones
A03：Slow-to-fast earthquakes through comparison across global subduction zones
B01：Development of multi-scale observation techniques for monitoring Slow-to-Fast earthquakes
B02：Data-driven discovery & monitoring of Slow-to-Fast earthquakes
B03：Spatio-temporal multiscale modeling and forecast of slow and fast earthquakes

Link

http://en.slow-to-fast-eq.org/

Our team is engaged in the following projects. Please contact us for further details.
