"Using the Earth as a natural laboratory for studying geological processes on long time-scales."

Subduction Zone Boundary Processes

  • Fluid flow and deformation including relationship to slow earthquakes
  • Thermal structure and distribution of stress and strain

Field work in

  • Sanbagawa belt SW Japan
  • Franciscan belt, W USA
  • Guatemala, central America etc.

Zones of continental mountain building and crustal thickening

Continental Crustal Processes

  • Mid crustal flow and plateau formation
  • Partial melting and exhumation of ultrahigh-pressure rocks
  • Movement and emplacement of magma including pluton growth

Field work in

  • Andes, S America
  • the Tibetan plateau
  • European Alps
  • central Japan

Techniques in structural analysis on meso- to microstructural scales

  • Development of crystallographic preferred orientation of minerals
  • Rock anisotropy and relationship to seismic anisotropy
  • Estimates of stress, strain and volume change

Approaches and techniques

Our group uses a combination of different techniques:

  • Field-based structural geology and mapping
  • Quantitative microstructural analysis including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)
  • Thermal modelling
  • Mineral-based thermometry and barometry including Raman-based techniques
  • Geochronology etc
